of understanding on friendship and cooperation between the Republic of Kazakstan and Australia
(Canberra, 12 December, 1996)

The Government of the Republic of Kazakstan and the Government of Australia (hereinafter called «the parties»)

CONFIRMING their adherence to the objectives and principles of the Charter of the United Nations;

WELCOMING efforts for international cooperation in the prevention and resolution of conflict and supportive of initiatives for the strengthening of international security and confidence;

REAFFIRMING their shared commitment to foster non-proliferation and disarmament, including through membership of and support for the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, the Chemical Weapons Convention and a Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty;

CONVINCED that further deepening of bilateral ties is in the interests of both countries and promotes the strengthening of peace and stability;

WISHING to develop friendly relations and cooperation between the two countries in areas of mutual interest;

HAVE REACHED the following understanding:

1. Relations between the parties will be founded on the principles of mutual respect, equality and mutual advantage, as well as other generally accepted norms of international law.

2. The two countries solemnly declare that (he broadening and deepening of the relations between the Republic of Kazakstan and Australia are not directed against the interest of any other state and do not affect their bilateral, regional or multilateral obligations towards them.

3. The parties are committed to the peaceful resolution of disputes through consultation and negotiation.
